FGS 2020: How to Find Volunteers & Keep Them! by Cari Taplin

My friend, teacher, and distant cousin, Cari Taplin, CG, was one of the speakers for the FGS 2020 Conference. I was especially interested in her topic of “How to Find Volunteers & Keep Them!” as I am on the boards for two local genealogy societies.

Cari broke her presentation down into four main categories:

  • Attracting Volunteers
  • Identifying Potential Volunteers
  • Ways to Keep your Volunteers
  • Award Opportunities for Volunteers

She shared a wide variety of ideas for each of the main topics. Many of them sounded fun and fairly easy to do such as adding music to gatherings/programs and setting up a greater at the door to welcome members. She also mentioned having some “volunteer-only events” which we have been able to do in the past that I would love to implement again. I will definitely need to refer back to Cari’s detailed handout for this program in the future.

You can hire Cari to give this lecture to your society and learn more about her at her website: https://genealogypants.com.
